Just joined the forum / posted a little bit of an introduction over on the other sub-forum.
Working through recommissioning a '78 model 3 1/2 strada currently. Took it for a short test run at the weekend, which went really well until all of the electrics disappeared. Worked through the issue, and got as far as identifying the original 6-pole ignition switch as a prime suspect.
Removed and dismantled the switch, taking notes and a couple of photos as I went. Unfortunately I didn't take enough of either
I have cleaned and test assembled all of the bits that are left.
If I could describe what I have currently - there are three main components:
(i) the main metal switch casing and barrel assembly
(ii) the plastic backing plate which has the spade connectors on one side, and metal contact plates for them on the other
(iii) an intermediary plastic plate which sits between theses two. This attaches to the key barrel which has three spring loaded metal sliders which press against the metal contacts on the rear plate, and rotates with the ignition key, making and breaking the contacts across the rear backing plate as the key is turned.
The problem I have is with the two sets of springs in the assembly.
- The smaller three I know for sure fit underneath the little white plastic pusher buttons which press the metal contacts on the rotating intermediary disc to help keep the the metal sliding contacts firmly pressed against the fixed metal contacts on the rear plastic backing plate. No problem there
- The other slightly larger three I have no idea where they go. I thought it was perhaps into the three larger holes in the studs on the back of the intermediary plastic plate to take up any slack in the assembly and/or provide some form of 'indexing' with the springs dropping in and out of the grooves on the inside front of the switch body as you rotate the key, to give you a positive click in each of the three key positions - but they seem too short for that now. They drop all the way into those holes, and won't do anything from there.
Would post pics on here if I could but haven't quite figured how to yet.
Was wondering if anybody could point me towards an exploded parts diagram of the switch assembly, or perhaps would know where the additional 3 springs go from memory ?
Apologies for looking for help after getting into such a dumb situation entirely of my own making - but any help or steer would be much appreciated.
Thx, Alan
