It sounds a little tappety, but no where near as bad as my bike was when I first got it!

Check the valve clearances and the side float on the rockers (it's adjustable).

If the bike has only been used occasionally then the rocker bushes/shafts may be worn. That's why I advise using 10w40 Semi synth, it tends to cling better. New rocker shafts can easily be made from 12mm silver steel (just a couple of circlip grooves), I made new rocker bushes from bronze, but NLM got hold of some originals a while back.

The rocker tips also wear so you end up measuring the valve clearance PLUS the tip wear. I reprofile the rocker tips with a diamond lap although you could use a very narrow feeler gauge or gauge wire.

See if you can tell if it sounds any worse than mine, this one as sounded just like this
from 2500 miles and I wont be taking any spanners except for routine maintenance
any time soon.
Listening to yours I would do the tappets but it sounds fine otherwise.

I just listened to your video, it sounds like my 76 strada . I had a 76 sport in 77, which I rebuilt, so the engine was ok, but when I traded in for a new 78 sport, at elite motors in tooting, the mechanic said it had piston slap, it didn't . The 78 on sport was much quiter. Maybe Paul C can tell us why??? I think it sounds ok though.

Hi Ponch, hard to tell from vid, most engines sound pretty clattery on you tube!

As some others have already said, change the oil and have a good look at what comes out for any metal, adjust the tappets whilst cold (simple job on a Morini) and change the cam belt again an easy job (see Paul Compton's aka Evguru's youtube vids). Morinis also like well balanced carbs again not hard but any proper bike shop should be able to oblige.

Then ride and see how it feels, yours seems to start and idle well, has had the rubber inlet conversion done and appears in great shape.

I have a '74 DBS as well and I would never call it quiet.

The Morini mailing list is also a friendly and helpful bunch, you'll find the details on the links page of Sorens excellent site (where you found the manuals), speaking of which your question about the clutch cover I think you were referring to Sorens bike and that's all his own work (obviously a very patient man!).

When your wife leaves you can I have her number and she can buy me a Camel!

Hi Ponch,

After watching your vid it certainly idles well, the tappets certainly are not any noisier than mine but worth checking.

How does she ride? It should pull nicely and rev well, you will struggle to get into 5th or 6th unless on an open road.

As far as servicing you could try motocicilo in Sydney, basically I have been all my own work by trial an error and you learn quickly that way. I am in the middle of rebuilding a 1968 Ducati 250 springhead wide case. Italian electrics is a challenge....

Cheers

Here's Soren's clutch cover in close-up. Note also his 'lightweight' brake pedal...

Hi Guys

Thank you all once agin for the information.

Brett, I took her for a drive for a quick ride up the road on a trade plate before I bought it and went well. I was actually a little surprised at how she run....what I mean by that is I am used to riding big bevel dukes (79 900SS - which I sold to to renos for our home) so power is no problem even if in a higher gear. The sport however needs to be ridden like a two stroke which is fun.

I can't wait to get back home to see my family and play with my new toy.

Giddy Up

Oh Simon, my wife and I are very happy together so there is no chance of us splitting and her buying you a Camel
