received from scott performance products today


The filter can be made. We can use the end caps off of the filter you sent us and it would be $79.00. If you need more than one we can machine some end caps to work. Please let me know if it is ok to go ahead and make the filter for you.

any comments at exchange rate today thats about £48 sterling plus postage, which probably equates to about 3 oil changes to break even.After that it's saving you money.
I've sent off an email to ask what the price is with the machined end caps as i've just realised that the price given may only be for using the caps from my new filter. once i receive a reply i'll post an update. :mrgreen:

that's about £52 at todays exchange rate I think i'd rather have the custom made caps :P

I think scott products would rather know who wanted one so that they could run the end caps as one batch.
I told them i was posting their email to see what the interest was before ordering myself.

I'm sure the interest will be there given the exorbitant price of the OE filters and the shaky supply situation.

Is there a minimum order number ???


I think if the manufacturer went ahead and made a batch up & added them to it's catalogue, the demand worldwide would be there...

We'll all be waiting to see if the engine goes bang using the filter - tight lot, Morini riders... :wink:

I'm guessing that the manufactures put a lot of effort in to matching the OE filter rates and pressures, but some will be seeking more reassurance!

Post something to Adrian, editor of ATG and get a comment in the club mag, that'll help in the longer run as well.

i don't think there is a minimum order number, as i've been quoted for just one only. Which is quite good as normally you can be held over a barrell with a minimum order quantity.
I for one will be ordering as at least i won't be stuck with a museum piece when the summer weather arrives. :roll:

It would be better if you gave me a total number of filters that you wanted so I could have them made all at the same time. If that is not possible I can make them individually but it will take a little longer. I do need to have the filters paid for as they are not a filter we make for stock. A couple of extracts from the ADV Rider forum on micronic filters - the key I think is regular oil changes and a tourough cleaning regime.....

Everyone ids entitled to there opinion, here is mine

I have been an A&P mechanic for over 17 years now and all heavy turbine powered aircraft engines use both paper and SS oil filters, but the are inline. The paper one catches the oil first and the stainless one completes the filter process. The reason the SS filter is used is that it is cleanable and easier to do a foreign materials inspection and because it cannot fail like a paper one.

What PBurke says has a lot of merit. The big danger with the paper filter is water or coolant. If the system should some how get water in it or god forbid “the bulletproof water pump of the 950 LC-8 leak” <>the filter will swell at which point one of a couple things will happen.

Oil flow will be restricted (The flow will decrease and pressure will increase BAD) until the filter fails to the point of either bursting or going into bypass either way, when that happens you are pumping pure FOD (Foreign Object Damage) threw your engine.

In my opinion the SS filter for typical riders is overkill. HOWEVER, I am an A&P mechanic and do everything to the max. Therefore, I have the Scotts SS filters in everything I have.

My take is this FOD can not be removed easily but water and coolant can be flushed out with minimal effort. I take care of all of my equipment to standards MUCH higher than the best pro racers.

Do I not ride sometimes because of my anal attitude? YES Am I sorry? NO

Also let me clarify I am not one of these people that switches bikes every couple years I get things when they are brand new and keep them. I expect a lot out of my bikes and keep them in immaculate condition inside and out. The end result of my rigorous maintenance schedule is they will and do last a lifetime.



Anyway, all good arguments on the mesh vs matrix type filters. There are pros and cons to each approach, and like I said before, you need to know what they are and make a choice which way you want to go.

Stainless: Absolute filtering to 35 microns, using a 2 dimensional mesh. Nothing bigger than 35 microns in diamater gets past . Longish FOD can theoretically get through if they 'thread the needle' past the mesh. Unlikely, but possible. Will not absorb water nor collapse.

Paper: Three dimensional matrix type filtering. They catch smaller particles than the stainless mesh can, but also let larger ones pass. HTF can that happen? They are generally like an 80/20 filter - they catch 80% of the stuff under XX microns, but let 20% larger than XX pass. They really work best in multi-pass filtering designs (we don't have that in the 950).

The way I always thought about it was the stainless mesh filter was like chicken wire. A golf ball and a marble would fall through every time, but a basketball won't. EVER. A paper filter is multiple obstruction - like the branches in a hedgerow. It can stop a marble or a golfball, ALMOST all of the time but not every time, and every once and a while, that basketball finds a clear spot in the branches and can get on through.

Both do a good job, or there would be a rash of internet prosecution and witch hunting going on by now.

And I also agree to buy one type of filter or another based on how it will acts when the oil is contaminated by water and ethylene glycol is utterly pointless. Some damage will occur to the plain bearings at that level of water in the oil, irregardless. Been there, done that.

That said, use what you want and move ahead. The bickering is tiresome. I'm done with this subject.

Duke, if we really want to get a good battle going, ask what kind of oil to use....

I've just emailed jake to say i'll pay in advance for the filter and when he has enough orders he can forward it on.

At least that way he knows what's going on. I've asked for the paypal address and postage charges for payment.

i think you need to be aware that shippping to uk would probably be about £25 (trial buy on website) and on top of that uk customs duty. Royal mail adds on £10 for admin processing and then vat and duty charged on top.

That's why it's better if you can get someone in the states to forward the filter on.

otherwise , duty and freight will double the cost of the filter. Compared with the value of a bike, it's small but still a lot of money to pay out :|

Think how much a ford car would now cost if the pricing had been done with an original expectation of selling just ONE. Is there really no sense at all in organising a batch quotation? - maybe even via 3X acting as wholesaler? OK, if its so very daft I won't mention it (yet) again! Anyway, the sun was out today!!! Good riding . . . . . 8)

good idea, but since i sent the filter off i think i'd take a step back from it all as i don't want to be seen to be taking over.

Hi All,

Like Chris I will be waiting to see if normal supplies resume.
I'm at NLM next week having the 9 1/2 serviced.
If the parts aren't available I will go on the 350 and leave the modern Morini in the garage at home.

Good news ...there are no longer any perceived problems obtaining filters according to Rob at NLM.....

bad news is they are £24 a pop which is bloody extortionate for a basic paper filter.... :cry:
