Funny lip on Barrel
Funny lip on Barrel
Hola, i'm hoping someone out there can shed a little light on this issue. I took a pair of 350 barrels to my local engineering firm just to check the wear. However on inspection of one of them, he said that it appeared that a some point someone had put a thin liner into the barrel and this had slipped. Sure enough when i looked there was a definate "inner ring" which was sitting a mill or so below the face of the barrel (the other barrel did not have this lip, but appears to be a newer barrel). He unfortunately informed me it was scrap. Ho hum i thought, lucky they are my spare barrels.
However that evening i was reading through this months classic bike and low and behold there was a picture of a morini barrel with seemingly the same slipped liner!! How odd i thought, either somebody has managed to get a photo of my barrrel to calssic bike or this lip is normal!
Does anyone know why the lip is there? Do i have a problem with a slipped liner? are they all like that Sir?
Any help would be appreciated, hasta pronto
Tony

Re: Funny lip on Barrel
Oh ok, not much response so far..... maybe someone could just tell me if their barrels look the same? Surely someone out there in Moriniland can tell me if all Morini barrels look like this?
Thanks, Tony

I'll try and help in lieu of somebody with more knowledge/experience....Alfonso70 wrote:Oh ok, not much response so far..... maybe someone could just tell me if their barrels look the same? Surely someone out there in Moriniland can tell me if all Morini barrels look like this?

When you mention "Classic Bike " mag; what edition? I can have a look at it and perhaps comment.
Also, I'm assuming you don't mean a wear ridge?
What year is your bike? I thought some later models had Nikasil type plating on the bore ( or may be that's just the 500's?).
Re: Funny lip on Barrel
Hi there, its on page 88 of this months (Feb 12) edition. The lip is actually on the gasket face rather then in the bore. If you look at the photo you will see a distinct "ring" approx 4mm wide on the liner! My bike is actually a 1975, but these are my spare barrels and i do not know old they are. Just as a point of interest the other barrel is similar to the one on page 89 of Classic bike with the additional rings in the gasket face.

Re: Funny lip on Barrel
I've just looked at the magazine, and I do see what you mean....but it looks like it could be std. production...? Unfortunately, I can't remember what mine look like (' 74) and the engine is in the bike. Think it probably looks like p.89 ones.
Quickest way to address the question, is if you put a 'call into North Leicester Mcycles - try and describe it to the parts man- he may put it through to somebody else maybe to clarify. They should be able to help?
Also, perhaps somebody might come along on this forum that is more familiar with the various types soon. Sorry I can't give you a definitive answer.

Hi Gareth,
Thanks for your help, i think i will give North Leicester a ring as you suggested. I agree it does look standard, the engineer has just worried me a bit thats all.
Thanks again, Tony

Re: Funny lip on Barrel
The barrels are of course lined anyway (with the exception of the Gilardoni type).
Replacement liners are available, but I suppose someone might have sleeved a liner.
There are grooves in the top of the liner to aid sealing.

The 71mm Gilardoni and K2 barrels are sleeved too.
Re: Funny lip on Barrel
Sorry if this is a bit late, I've only just read your post. I went and checked my collection of spare barrels and maybe found what you are looking at, see photo's.
Of the four spare barrels I have, one has a tiny step at the top it is stamped with an 'R' and on the underside I have marked it with an 'R' interestingly it has a notched skirt as well. My other rear barrel doesn't have a notch, but there is a barely perceptible bevel or chamfer of the mating face, this barrel doesn't have a notched skirt though and it isn't factory stamped with an 'R' either.
Neither of my front barrels display any such bevels or notchings.
Perhaps it was an early machining that was dropped later on. Ultimately NLM are likely to be the ones to shed light on this, personally I cannot see why you shouldn't reuse your barrel, the notch is above the TDC position.
Regards
Jim

Re: Funny lip on Barrel
I've now had a quick peek at the magazine pictures.
The barrel with the step in the top is a 350 one (by counting the fins) whilst the other with the grooves in the top is a 500.
I'm guessing that the groove is for the early composite gaskets, whilst the grooved type is use with the solid Aluminium gaskets.

Re: Funny lip on Barrel
Hi Paul, Thanks for answering my query. The lip on in your photo is similar to mine but a little smaller. So i guess i have an early barrel, and don't have much to worry about. I'm over in the Uk at moment and will be going to NLM in a week or so, so i will take it with me and ask them to have a look at it, and i'll post it what they say here, just for anyone who's interested.
Thanks again for all the advice,
Tony
