AGT No 77

Post by Stempy »

I had a spare hour this afternoon and I thought I would start putting away my AGT magazines in the recently purchased binders, Long have been put in each magazine in the binders. I’ve always been having a flick through to remind you of some of the comments and technical advice. To my amazement looking through number 77 I thought I recognise that registration and there is my 500 the previous owner had taken it to the IOM :D

You mean the Valentini bike David? At least I think that's what it is. You must have been made of stern stuff to ride that down to Italy!

Great to see Chris Webber and Pete Fisher discussing the bike.

So, the pictures were taken at The Highlander on Mad Sunday 1982..

When did ATG 77 come out?

Hi David.

Yes, it is a massive coincidence to see both bikes on the same page in ATG.

You went two-up to the Isle of Man on that bike?

Your girlfriend must have been keen on you before you set off. Hope you didn't have a frosty time of it at the T.T.

Re: KYD 797V. I certainly do remember this bike (!) although it's now longer since I owned it than I owned it (if you see what I mean...). I bought it on New Year's Eve 1992 from a Terry Fox (who was more of a BMW owner, although he did come to the following year's Cadwell Park meet) and sold it to Dr. Andy something in 2005, who lived near the top of Shooter's Hill.
In that time I replaced the lump with a 501 Excalibur engine, had the heads ported and polished by Len Patterson, and other bits lightened by Alex at NLM and some other nice bits added. It took me and my now civil partner Helen all over Spain and France several times, although it did blow the main bearings in southern Spain and took several months to repatriate. Phil Smith kindly rebuilt the moto (the original 478 one) at a discount, as I was quite a regular visitor to WeeVee (it being just down the road).
With the 501 engine in, it was a bit quicker, but the main advantage was it had a lovely even power response, once the 30mm pumper carbs were properly jetted (it took a while!). Bruce Mackie rode it much quicker than me around Cadwell in the mid-'90s - I'm not sure but I think his blue and white 3 1/2 had a 501 engine (or was it his partner Louise's?).
Andy put the bike up for sale last year (?) for £3k and offered me first dibs, but I had a big Guzzi in the garage and although I was tempted I didn't go for it. Don't think I regret that...
I do now have a 3 1/2 Strada to rebuild, so the Guzzi may have to go...
I will dig out some pics when I get around to it.
