Running in new rings

Post by Andy_C »

What is the thinking about running in new rings in the glaze busted bores?

Been thinking slowly build up the revs and dont let it labour for a couple of hundred miles, or do I just ride it like I stole it?

Thanks.

I have had lots of varying advice on this

Going to go for keeping the revs up, short bursts of high revs, longer periods of slower running, dont let it idle at first start up or when stopped in traffic

Reckon 20 miles or so ought to do it.

Hopefully have it back up together next week.

Don't overthink it to much , use the bike as normal , don't lug up hills in high gears, vary the revs and keep the engine running light .

Very true not to overthink - there are so many differing views on the subject, I am sure it will be fine.

Took opportunity to take the bike on it's maiden run after the new rings / exhaust valves.

Did just over 20 miles keeping the revs up / not letting it labour, did not take it any higher than about 6K. Did the 20 miles in 2 10 mile sections letting it cool off between runs.

No dramas, ran perfectly.

Goes a lot better - as expected, starts better, and has a good solid tickover at just uner 2K, before it would sometimes die.

Probably rev it a bit harder during the next run which might be a while given the weather forecast.

Also tweaked the exhaust "nuts" about 1/2 a turn on each.

It also has some compression now :D

Looks like the jobs a good un........
