Have a laugh on me

Post by Andy_C »

Got the 3 1/2 pretty well back together - I would have been much nearer completion had I not made a schoolboy error.

Having re assembled the rear cylinder, I was just about to put the head on the front cylinder when I noticed I had fitted the pistons the wrong way around :x

Although I had marked bith pistons with a sharpie, and kept them away from each other I managed to pick up the front one and put it in the rear and vice verca.

Oh dear, or words to that effect........... :D

We are all guilty. Refilling oil whilst omitting to refit a drain plug, starting a BMW without refitting the dipstick, knocking a main bearing clean through the case etc.
At least you noticed in time.

Check you have the orientation of the pistons the right way round , the combustion Chambers in the piston crown must face the correct way, ther is a picture in the blue book , I should know I got that wrong , on my first engine build .

Oh yes - they are definatley the right way around as per 45 of the blue book :D

I even took the laptop out into the garage open at the page when I put the pistons in the second time !!!

P.S. Started it up this afternoon, nice that it has lots of compression now - just need some decent weather to put some miles on it / bed the rings in.
