I took my Tachometer apart, can it be saved?!

The capacitors have exploded, and it looks prety nasty inside. I do not have a problem with replacing components, but what else do I need to be aware of that could mean that it is not worth repairing. The needle is stiff, and does not bounce back. Is there any reference material for rebuilding Veglia Tachometers?

Hi,
Whilst no one has replied, I know that some people with way more knowledge than me have done a repair/rebuild of these, but it isn't an easy job.
The most recent posting on this subject was that somebody replaced the 'guts' inside with those from a cheap Chinese generic rev counter for very little cost.

Might be worth a search.

I don’t know anything about them. But if it was mine I would try to save it! Capacitors are cheap if you can get enough info off the old ones! Is the rotor free? Are there any electricalcontacts on the rotor? Good luck

I believe that Mark Bridger of this parish has repaired one, but concluded that it isn't commercially viable to do so (?).
Only other help may be to look up 'Ferrari Dino' rev counter repair as they are very similar inside.

It has been a while ago, but I finally got around to fixing my Tachometer. I bought a very rusty Tachometer from a club member, I had no idea whether it would work, but after testing it, the electronics seemed OK, but the mechanism was not great. I bought another Tachometer from Ebay as 'spares or repair', it was labelled as a Veglia Electronique. The mechanism was in good condition, so I put the two together. USing a 12v A/C output signal as shown by Paul Compton in his video, I was able to tune the Tachometer somewhere near. I then attached it to my bike to try and get it more precise. I did get the bezel fitted by Timeless Motorcycles, they were really good to work with.

That’s a really good outcome. Both mine are of the mechanical variety but it has spurred me on to try and repair my electronic tacho from a BMW which stopped working.

Three MRC members, Mark, George (not you George) & Gary have an arrangement between them whereby they are able to build and fit new circuit boards to 3½ and 500 tachos. As they originally set this arrangement up to fix some tachos for their own bikes and a couple of friends it isn't an advertised service. But if you were to ask you could find out if they could help.
Sometimes the problem isn't the circuit board in which case the fix cannot work.

I should also say I can properly fit new chrome bezels to speedos/tachos for the 3½ and 500. I can "supply and fit" or just "fit". Agreed its a bit late for you but it might help others who might read this thread.
