78 strada break shoes

got some new rear break shoes from nlm a few weeks ago tried fitting them recently and they wouldnt fit, too big, so spoke to rob at nlm to explain the situation. initially he reckoned the rear wheel was wrong but after trying several pairs of shoes in a strada hub found them all to be too big. these shoes are imported from italy from a company making them to the original size/design, so i wondered if anybody else has recently bought a pair of brake shoes and had similar problems and if so how was the problem overcome ? or can anybody recommend where i might be able to source a pair that fit. cheers, andy.

Does it have wire or cast wheels - my 78 sport is actually a 76 it would seem.

If wire the sport and strada rear drums are different sizes - strada drum is smaller!
Not sure if this carried over to the cast wheels.

cast wheels, 180mm bore on the drum, the 250 cast wheel has a 160mm drum. they fit the plate fine but when you offer them up to the drum theyre to big, i was convinced they were the wrong shoes but rob at nlm assures me theyre right so wondered if anybody else had the same problem.

Yeah, they don't fit.

Had this same problem ten years ago; thought it might have been resolved by now!

The only real solution is to have your original shoes relined.

Same thing. I still have a brand new set in a box that didn't fit. I seem to remember that I was given instructions to file off the leading edge of the friction material.

I was only changing the shoes because I thought I should. The old ones wern't that bad.

My solution is:
I actually never ever use the back brake and I've only ever ridden my Morini on race tracks, so these shoes should last forever!

If it comes to that I replaced my rear pads and then the disc started to score,with small particles of the surface embedded in the pads,so I put the old ones back in, as they were OK anyway. I cannot afford to lash out on new discs at the drop of a hat. I'll have to just put my foot in the spokes if I need to stop in a hurry.
