Rear tank support rubbers.

Post by Mark »

Hi all.
I have 3 sports, all with a variety of bits of rubber between the top frame rails and the underside of the tank.
Was there ever a factory purpose made item when new and if so, can they still be found?
Thanks.

Hi Mark,

The original rubber on my 1978 bikes (one of which I've owned from new) was a piece of grey closed cell foam rubber approx. 150mmx100mm, and around 15mm thick.
To be honest it wasn't very good. It held water, rotted to the frame and tank and didn't do what it was supposed to do for very long.
A far superior mount is the type that slips over the frame tube - for example like these. http://www.discovolantemoto.co.uk/tank- ... -991-p.asp. Other suppliers are available.
That is what I've been using since the early 1980's. I think the first ones I had were for a Yamaha LC250.

Hope this helps,
George.

Yeah, same dodgy grey foam on my 1980 Strada. You don't want to be sourcing any of that :)

Hi I got a couple of the supports George mentions, money well spent. When I got the bike it had a piece of the sort of lagging used in domestic hot water pipes. It caused the tank to resonate badly.

Those supports George mentions look good. Also yes, my new in 77 sport came with the nasty grey foam pad too. I have been cutting up closed cell camping mats for years since, you have to tune the number of layers to get the right height but it doesn't soak up water and is very cheap. May not be good if you are a regular camper as your mat gets shorter and shorter though. :(
