250 kickstart return spring

Post by 72degrees »

Anyone know if the 250 (2C twin) kickstart return spring is the same as on a 77 350?

As far as I know, there is only one return spring used across the whole range.

I guessed that might be the case but thanks for confirming before I temporarily rob the spare 350 engine of one (it's got to be stripped down before I can use it in the new project anyway).

Plans are fluid at present but I may build an NHCA Forgotten Era class Morini 350 MkII - but based on a 250 that otherwise needs a great deal of work doing to make a presentable road bike.

The plans have already suffered a set back in budget since I found that the Gilera GFR 125 #1 refurbishment project is going to require the fork legs re-chroming (I've already replaced the rear suspension linkage and fitted a new top steering head bearing). Still, they only built 430 others so I feel I ought to keep it on the road. So there's a chance that if anyone is in need of a seemingly low mileage 250 twin power plant I may soon have one available.

Have you checked with Bob Wright? He was telling me he sold a complete NOS fork assembly for one of the earlier 125s for very reasonable money.

I'll give him a try as it seems from other GFR owners' experience that with 40000 Kms on the clock the fork bushes may be well worn (although it only had an advisory on leaking seals at its last MoT). John at Revs Suspension won't do anything until he has a had a good look at the internals. The one leg is worn down through the nickel by the seal.

As I suspected, however, the 250 kickstart return spring wasn't actually broken. I'm guessing it had been reassembled in the wrong position, possibly after someone had been inside to sort the clutch (which works fine) as the coating of gasket goo bears witness to the cover having been off.

Otherwise, it seems in a condition to confirm the apparent mileage. I even managed to get the original Castrol Olio sump plug out without too much of a struggle.
