Starter motor clutch - flywheel plate removal

I've removed my starter motor but can't undo the bolt in the centre of the 3 centrifugal shoes, it just spins round in the engine cover. How do you remove the whole shoe assembly from inside the casing? Have I missed something ... any bright ideas, anyone?

I've done this some years ago when I put the "later" type clutch shoes in. And a much better thing it is too. I think I undid the nut whilst everything was connected by jamming the chain with a screwdriver but I could be mistaken.

The shaft has a pair of flats on the end.

I'm pretty sure I covered it in my videos.

There's a nyloc nut at the end of the shaft end preventing me getting anything to grip and the bolt just spins. Is there supposed to be anything holding it in position because the whole flywheel assembly is pretty loose, as if a spacer has shattered or been left out?

I watched the videos (3?) but maybe not well enough. Which installment?
I will look again at the weekend.

It sounds like someone has used a wide full-nut. It should be a narrow full-nut or a half-nut.

You may have to make a holding tool by cutting a slot in the end of a piece of round bar. The bar should be as large a diameter as possible that still fits through the nylon lock ring.

It's amazing what a neighbour with an angle grinder can do. Nut is off, bolt was history probably about 20 years ago with few threads left to speak of, probably one for the museum of horrors.

While there are great video instructions for reassembling the motor part, does anyone know where can I find an exploded diagram for the second half of the assembly: chain, centrifugal shoes, spacers, backing plates etc?

My chain was so slack it had begun to rub the case. Whilst in there just check the wiring coming from the coils, where it is retained by a clip.Mine had started to wear through because the clip was at a slight angle. I cannot remember enough detail to advise accurately on the reassembly. I don't remember having any problems but as i say i fitted the later type clutch shoes and a new chain about 4 years ago.

Next move is to clean and service the motor which was working fine until I noticed a melted area by a fuse which happened with a temporary loss of electrics. Haven't used it since.
