Flywheel weights

Post by pistonslap »

When recently doing a cam belt change I felt a noticeable difference in weight when I picked up an early flywheel as opposed to the more modern one from a K model (originally with electric start). Despite the additional ring for the electric start the latter weighed in as 1.64kg when the older flywheel was 1.94kg.
I notice the flywheel on Paul's Youtube cam belt replacement video looks like it has been heavily machined.
After getting rid of the electric start some years ago I replaced the generator cover with the aesthetically more pleasing early version which means I am also running the older (and now I realise heavier flywheel)
Just wondering if any of you have experience with running lighter flywheels?
I know it is a common mod on racing Ducati's and supposedly enables faster acceleration but at the possible expense of a perfect idle.
Thanks in advance.

Paul's cambelt change video is of my '76 Sport, pre-electric start. I'm sure Paul would have commented at the time if the flywheel had been lightened, so I presume it's standard (although a number of other bits such as clutch basket and primary gears have been lightened). I'm not planning another cambelt change for a while so I can't tell you how much the flywheel weighs.

Regards, Mark.

If you really want maximum acceleration then get it lightened,
but a heavier flywheel makes for a more pleasant engine to ride,
the 3 1/2 is quite revy as it is and I would never think of making
mine any lighter.

Hi, 500 Camels have lighter flywheels than the 500 road Morinis (with the starter drum removed).
Have fun.
