Having got the Coguaro back on the road and giving it some shakedown runs it has decided to eat its own starter motor. I had replaced the soggy plastic mess with NLM's ally conversion and that worked fine. Today I press the button and just got a resounding click from the relay. Got things going on the kickstart and investigated once home.
On dismantalling the starter I was greeted by a large amount of fluff and a shower of copper bits. Stator winding is shot as is the rotor winding. I repair small motors as part of my job but this is a bit far gone!!
So anyone got a starter motor for sale?
John.
Just to make it even more convenient I'm taking the Coguaro to the Morini Treffen at the weekend - good job I honed my left foot kickstarting on the Strada!!
Wanted - 501 Starter Motor
Re: Wanted - 501 Starter Motor
The basic starter motor is the same as the Cagiva Freccia and therefore most likely the Mito.
The shaft is different, but it may well be possible to press the shaft out and swap them over.

Re: Wanted - 501 Starter Motor
Hi John,
NLM are showing 11 used ones in stock, although at quite a price!
Not heard of the starter eating itself like that before. I guess if the cush drive on the sprag clutch disintegrates and locks the sprag up then you could very easily overspeed the starter motor. The normal failure is that the bits of rubber from the cush get picked up by the oil pump and wreak havoc with the rest of the engine.
Anyway, I have a spare electric start in my spare 501 motor.
I don't know it's history as I've never used it. It's been taken apart by the previous owner , but all I can see which is obviously wrong is the o ring between the can and the end cap looks to have swollen and is a bigger ID than the diameter of the starter. Maybe why it was taken apart in the first place, or maybe why it was never put back together. Anyway, the windings and brushes all look good and it rotates freely so I'm sure with a bit of a clean up and a new o ring it would whizz back into life.
Let me know if you want to see some pictures.
I'll take it into work with me tomorrow and leave it there- that way I can post it immediately if you do want it. At a push it could be with you in time to rebuild and fit before the treffen.
I don't really have a price in mind- I'd rather see a morini kept on the road than parts gathering dust in my garage, so let me know what you think is fair...

Re: Wanted - 501 Starter Motor
Thanks Tom - I was kindly offered one by Vernon in Colchester and it turned up this morning. I have put it in and all spins except the sprag won't hold in for some reason. I've taken it apart and checked for foreign objects and it is fine. By hand it holds one way and spins the other but obviously when loaded doesn't hold. It has 'Morse' on the outside ring but no other info otherwise I would go to the local bearing factor and order one. Any ideas anyone?
John.

Re: Wanted - 501 Starter Motor
Just thought I'd let you know that I have made progress!!!
The train of thought was 'It's a clutch on a Morini. They need a little filing from time to time to get the burrs down. OK it's not a multiplate clutch but I gave all the contacting surfaces a bit of a rub with fine emery and gave the sprag a good cleaning with Loctite surface cleaner.
And blow me down it only worked!!!!
Had to stop playing as it is time to go and do some coaching but tomorrow is another day - and the sun is going to shine!!
Thanks to all for your responses. Vernon - cheque is in the post!!!
