Any electrical wizards out there?

Post by Italic »

Hi, I am new to the forum and don't actually own a Morini!
A friend of mine is storing their bike with me for a couple of months and has asked me to "take a look at the electrics" while it is here!
The bike is a 350 Strada (1982-3?) and here is a brief history of the problem.
When the bike was bought it was running fine and seemed to be charging the battery OK but the previous owner had removed the main fuse.
Once a fuse was fitted, it started blowing fuses and bulbs. This problem gradually worsened until recently when a new regulator was fitted. Since fitting the new regulator the battery does not charge!
My electrical skills are pretty bad on a "normal" bike, so excuse my lack of knowledge of the mysterious Morini electricals.
The new regulator has been wired up exactly as the old one was, - two yellow wires from the alternator and one brown wire to the fuse box. (This may have been incorrect on the original regulator, can anyone confirm?).
I have checked the AC output of the two yellow leads with a multimeter and this seems fine.
When I connect the multimeter to the battery terminals and start the engine the voltage reading does not rise at all, (If battery was charging I would expect this to read about 13V - is this correct?).
I tried running the multimeter from the + terminal of the battery to the brown wire coming from the regulator and got a reading of between 12.5v and 13.5v which was rising and falling with the revs of the engine.
Can anyone out there help with this problem or give me any tips on how to test the regulator is working/wired correctly.
Any help greatly appreciated, - Thanks, Jon.

Check the voltage on the brown wire. That's the enable/voltage sense line from the ignition switch.

Thanks for your reply Paul.
The brown wire is live when ignition is on.
I have also noticed that the new regulator is slightly different to the old one.
The old regulator has five terminals: G G R +B C. The original wiring was two yellows from alternator to the G terminals, R and +B unused, (these are a shared terminal), and the brown wire to the fuse box connected to C.
The new regulator has six terminals: G G R +B L C. It has been connected the same way as the original.
Should anything be connected to the L terminal?

Update: Took a look at the bike this weekend, - the "extra" terminal is an earth.
