Dragging clutch and oil light

Post by Tinker »

Hi folks did the Dave Day on Saturday wow never seen as many bikes in one place before, lots of people on bridges and lay-byes waving it was amazing. My clutch doesn’t seem to slip anymore yippee. But the down side sitting in queues for long periods and my clutch dragging and making it nigh on impossible to get neutral when stationary any tips on this? So my left hand had a good workout holding the clutch in. And my oil light came on on the way to the meet-up point, plenty of oil in it, had a waggle of the wire and it didn’t do it again.

Hi Tinker.

I'm glad to hear that you were involved with the Dave Day ride. I played a small part myself, being one of the volunteers helping to organise the parking at the National Motorcycle Museum. It was pretty hectic with a huge number of bikes arriving, not helped by the fact that the Freemasons were using the Conference Centre so there were 600 cars to accommodate. It took more than an hour for all the bikes to leave. Hope you all had a great time in Barrow.

As far as the dragging clutch goes, I suspect that if you spent an inordinate amount of time in gear with the clutch lever in, it would have overheated. I used to commute in London on a Royal Enfield Bullet and soon found that if I didn't put the bike in neutral every time I came to a standstill, the clutch would start dragging to the point where I'd be pulled into fast moving traffic. Even on a modern bike it is easier to click into neutral while the bike is still moving rather than after you have stopped. If you are in gear having stopped, slipping the clutch slightly to move a bit forward should make neutral easier to find.

I'm guessing your oil warning light registers oil pressure rather than temperature but there may be a link? It sounds as though you may have fixed it anyway.

I find that it goes into neutral easier while moving from second to neutral but not from first to neutral. And impossible while stationary. But because a lot of it was crawling speed I was in first a lot hence no neutral. Well done Jen for helping out with Dave Day there must have been hundreds of unsung heroes.
