Good afternoon,
I have had my recently acquired Corsaro running very smoothly with no nasty noises and running very well. However I have been told horror stories about the alloy the oil pump bodies are made from and the effects of old acidic oil. B&B on Flea bay have them to sell just the castings, fit your old gears for £100 plus post.. The listing shows 11mm tall gears. I have a parts book which shows all parts but can they be easily removed with the primary drive cover off? And will the 1963/64 machine have 11mm tall gears. I would happily buy this these castings tomorrow if I was sure they would fit. It's not worth buggering up a good engine for £130 ish. Any advice would be welcome, how good are the B&B castings

Yes, all accessable in the primary cover. Mine sounded fine to but it was surviving on splash lube. The pump was stuck solid and the teeth on its drive gear had stripped too. I suspect a 63 would be 9mm but it's easy to strip it and confirm. Then again, from what you've told me I think your engine is later so may well be 11mm! You'll have to look now!

As Steve said, once the outer cover is off the pump is easy to remove, just three little screws. I have a spare pump, which is too far gone to use, from a 1964 bike which has 11mm gears. I have no idea when the change in gear size was made. I guess the only way to know the size for sure is to take yours apart. That risks the original breaking apart of course, but if it were me I would do that in the hope that the gears are 11mm. I've not seen the B&B bodies but they can't possibly be worse than a sixty year old original.

Jenny, my new pump was from B&B. It was spot on. I have spoken with the owner on the phone and he has a later engine with side points. Sounds like it's a lot faster than mine too!

Your invaluable help with this is much appreciated. Before I start taking things apart, points for example. What are the ignition timing figures and are there any timing marks. My guess is under the alternator cover plate. I will treat it to a new set of points and condenser and possibly a coil as the one on it is very original looking and they dont last for ever. Just fitted a new petrol tap as the old one was leaking also needs a new rear tank mounting rubber spacer. The old petrol tap just needed a new rubber seal, I can make one but are they available to buy as a spare would do no harm?

I haven't ever touched the ignition on my bikes, but I've found some snippets of information in an old Italian bike magazine...

The spark plug gap is 0.35mm - 0.40mm. Original spark plugs were Bosch W240T2 but NGK B8ES are a good substitute.

I've no idea about timing marks but fixed advance is 20 degrees 'Prima del Punto Morto Superiore' or 'Before Top Dead Centre'. Automatic advance is 20 degrees to 42 degrees before Top Dead Centre.

The nut on the alternator is a left hand thread.

I don't know what fuel tap you have but Orlandi are a popular fitment. If you can find someone who sells Orlandi taps and spares you may find what you need.

As for the tank rubber, I believe that the originals were made by Ariete. Most folk probably just bodge something with some foam and cable ties, but it's possible that Carrot Cycles may be able to help with an original. https://www.carrotcycles.co.uk/index.php

I am curious about this oil pump thread because I may just be buying my old 125 Corsaro Super Sport back from the gent I sold it to many years ago. It is the last of the models, 1969 - 1975.
Would this model possibly have the same oil pump and if I do buy it, inspection of the pump recommended ?
Is there a link to the pump body from B&B ?

Hi rossguzzi.

It's not often that the opportunity arises to purchase a 5-speed Super Sport so I would say 'go for it'.

If/when you get the bike it is worth looking at the oil pump. If the pump body looks like shiny aluminium then it is most likely a replacement. If it looks a dull grey then it is likely an original. If it's an original then the best thing to do is leave it alone until you can get a new replacement body.

Thanks for your reply. It was mine 30 odd years ago and has not been used much since. I`m sure it has the original pump in it. So would the new pump have the gears in it or do the old ones need to be inserted into the new body ? Also I don`t know what size gears the old has and the new requires. Here it is ready for a trip back in 1985.

Thanks for the photo. The black and yellow paint scheme is cool. I've only ever seen one other like that.

The pump body from B&B is just the body and you insert your own gears. I've seen about four pumps and they all had 11mm gears so as yours is one of the last of the line it's a fair bet that your gears will be 11mm.

There were I believe 15 of these imported into Australia. Some red, some yellow. I know of one person who has 2. One of them has only around 100 kms on it.
