I have a new gasket for refitting the clutch side panel after renewing the clutch-side oil seals. Have carefully cleaned all traces of old gasket off mating faces. Should I use any sealing compound with the gasket to help seal the cover, or just fit the (dry) gasket? Advice on best type of sealant please (I have a new tube of Hylomar and an old tube of Gold Hermatite on my shelf). Thanks.

Although you should be able to get an oiltight seal with the gasket dry, providing both mating faces are perfect, I've always used a sealant as well. I've always found hylomar good in the past.

I don't like to use sealant unless absolutely neccesary. I like to be able to take covers off and be able to re-use the gasket.

Wipe the gasket down with oil, or thinly coat it with grease.

If you do decide to use sealant, use VERY little of it. If you can see it squeezing out as you tighten the bolts, then it's also squeezing in by the same ammount. A thin line of sealant is fine, big blobs and drips are not.
