500 Ignition Timing Problem

Hello - I have a 500 SEI-V Sport and am having trouble starting the bike. The starter has new gear oil and works just fine, but when I hit the starter is runs slowly, then lugs, then runs slowly, then lugs, etc. I finally got it started and it will rev to 7K just fine, Good battery. I did tune and sinc the carbs, when warm it idles O.K. and it runs great at 65 - 70 mph!.

So, when I did get it warmed up, I put a strobe light on the hole in the side case and at 5 to 6000K RPM it showed dead on the AMT-1 (30 deg advance?) mark under the cam nut.
Here is the weird part: when I dropped the throttle to low idle, the strobe shows about 25 deg advance (assuming the DMS-1 mark is 0 deg), so it is not dropping to 5--10 deg and is probably about 20-25 deg when trying to start. Thus the lugging at with starter on.

Has anyone had this problem?

Any suggestions on fixing the timing problem?

Many thanks.

Ciao Pete

I had this on my 250 2C - front cylinder stuck on full advance, this being controlled by the transducers. I changed the transducers which cured it, but then the pick up turned out to be a bit dodgy.
These were unavailable at the tie, so I went with an replacement system from SWF which transformed the bike! Knowing what I know now, I wish I'd have done it straight away. As a bonus, I had to convert to 12v so I have better electrics too.

Thanks for the answer. I will get a new ignition system.

Any info to compare SWF and Sachse?

Thanks
Pete

I went with the SWF kit as it come complete with coils, wiring and even mounting brackets. Considerably cheaper than the Sachse kit. I have used Sachse on other bikes though with no problems
