Tires won't mount on Rims?

Hi there bought a set of metzler sportec tire for my 80 500 sport.
Took the rims and tires down to the tire store and was told the tires would not bead up to the rim?
They are the Gold Griemca 18 wheels
Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben, I've fitted Metzler (tubeless type with a tube) tyres to a 500 in the past with no problems but they were not Sportec.
The Grimeca cast wheels must have tubes fitted and it is fine to use tubes with a tubeless type tyre.
Yet I have had a problem with seating a Metzler tyre on a BMW wheel; when I gave up and took it to a tyre fitter it proved impossible to seat as it was too tight a fit on the rim!
Remember you need to use tubes in the tyres.
Take care, hope it works out, Ian

I've had the same problem with Avons and received the following advice.
You need proper old fashioned tyre soap, not one of the liquid based products.
Ideally you want a feed direct from a compressor tank, not via a regulator.
The valve core should be removed.
You need a quarter turn valve and a screw on adapter to the valve stem.
With the compressor tank charged to something like 80-120psi, snap open the valve to 'blow' the tyre up onto the beads seats.

Hi again, did all this up to 95psi and wrecked a new quality tube (Michelin) before I went to a tyre specialist who said he wasn't surprised and said anything above 80psi was potentially a risk for the longevity of the tube, never mind the safety (he went well above this to 110psi and failed to seat the Metzler tyre); 120psi is too much!
Usually with tyre soap no valve core etc tyres seat well before 60/70psi because of the speed of inflation and constant movement.
Good luck, take care, Ian

I'm wondering if Ben means the tyre fitter is refusing to fit these tyres to this type of rim? Rather than them being physically difficult to seat? If not then I also like to warm up tyres and rims to ease the process, as well as the above advice.

If all else fails, a squirt of a silicon based 'lubricating spray' (one that is suitable for use on rubber)on a portion of the rim/tyre that won't seat might do the job.
Had to resort to this with my last front tyre when I also had this problem. As per Paul's suggestions, 80PSI with no valve and on it went with a big bang. It has never moved on the rim since.
Regards,
George.

My "secret weapon" for tires that won't pop out is Windex brand glass cleaner, liberally applied to both the rim and tire. Still takes a lot of air pressure, but it works every time.
Warming the tires in the sun as much as possible helps immensely as well.

...and therein lies the root of the problem. What is this sun thing?

Thank you all for your replies
Just got the tires back from the shop yesterday.
