Re Torque or not?

I have always re torqued the head / exhaust fittings after the first run on any bike that I have had after a rebuild - just think it is good practice.

Nothing in the Blue Book about re torqueing after the first after a rebuild.

Any thoughts, just do as I always have ?

Appreciate a re torque means taking the rockeer gear off but probably worth it.

Hi,
Personally I've not bothered to retorque the heads on my Morinis since the aluminium gaskets came into use, and haven't had one leak yet due to torque relaxation.

Exhaust port nuts are another story however, as they need tightening a few times during the first hot engine runs.

Regards,
George

Thanks for that George, good to hear from someone with experience.

To be honest I was not looking forward to having to take the valve gear off again.

Appreciate that the exhaust nuts will a re torque.

Just need some decent weather to get the new rings run in.

To re toque the exhaust nuts is absolutely importante.
I've been used to re torque the head nuts after 500km. Lately I've given these nuts a bit more toque than required when mounting the head. Then wait one or two days, lösen the nuts and give them the right torque.
So I dont have to take of the rockers again. For me that works well.

Thanks Norbert, I followed the guidance on torquing the head bolts in the Blue Book.

I'll keep an eye on things but I will remember to tweak the exhaust nuts.

I mark the exhaust nuts and head with a fine line so it is quick to check for movement.

If you are using solid aluminum gaskets then no need to re-torque. If you use the early type metal&fibre ones (which some places still sell, e.g. in with those "complete set of engine gaskets" often vacuum wrapped onto a cardboard backing) then you should definitely re-torque those as Morini did recommende it way back then.

Yep I have used the solid aluminium ones from Mdina.

Only out about 40 miles or so on it so far as not really been riding weather - too much rain, and I never that it out in the rain.

If we get a decent cold dry day I will probably stick a few more miles on it.
