VHB25HS

Hi all.
Can anybody tell me how to get the carb floats out?
Is the pin threaded anywhere or is it just pressed in; there’s not much to get hold of and I don’t want to damage anything by being ham fisted (something I can be quite good at) :D
I’d like to clean them ultrasonically but not sure I can trust the floats to survive hence the dilemma.
Also, how do I determine if a slide needle needs replacing (any kind of defect at all?) and what size replacement do I order for this carb?
Come to think of it how does one determine excessive slide wear too?
And, … what’s the correct float height and how do I determine it?
Any helpful ideas appreciated, Ta.

Hello Mark.

The pin isn't threaded, it just has a bit of rough knurling on one end so you can grip that end with some pliers and pull it out. It seems a bit crude but you hopefully won't damage anything.

As far as I know, the floats should withstand ultrasonic cleaning but you can always put them to one side if you're not sure. Someone on here may be better informed than me.

As long as the slide needle doesn't have any obvious dings or scrapes and is nice and smooth it should be fine. The following film clip is worth a watch...

Float height should be 10mm from the carb body to the centre of the float. I've attached a couple of images from the 'Blue Book'.

Good luck.
Jenny.

When I did the carbs on my Strada I had the same problem and the pin was flush so couldn’t get any pliers on it, with the advice of somebody on here ( can’t remember who ) I managed to get a thin blade between where the float hinges and ease the pin out enough to get the pliers on it, hope this helps,
barney

Well said Barney. :)

You've just reminded me that I had the same issue when I first stripped my carbs about 25 years ago. I used a Stanley knife between the float hinge and the carb body, at the end furthest from the knurling, to ease the pin out. Cleaned up the slight damage on the pin and used it again no problem. Even if you totally destroy the pin, new ones are available from Eurocarb for a couple of pounds.

Thanks very much for the info Jenny and Barney, I’ll get back to it in the morning.

I’ve just tapped out these pins if tight but usually they are not. A very gentle tap with my light glazing hammer and an old nail ( suitably named!) No points for hitting the casting though.

I just had the same issue with the pin this weekend on a VHB 24 (for my MV Agusta 125 Sport). I used a razor blade and tweezers, gently coaxed the pin out by dragging/scraping just enough to grab it with the tweezers. Worked fine 🙂
