Another possible carb issue

Post by Andy_C »

Took my 3 1/2 Strada (fitted with a sport motor) out for some excercise this afternoon.

I found that it picks up much better if I dont use full throttle - probably best at around 1/2 - 3/4, if you wind it open it "growls" and picks up slower, thinking that there may be a carb / jetting issue.

I have never taken the carbs apart and I am inclined to leave as is for now and just use the throttle accordingly and enjoy the bike.

Any suggestions as to what it may be?

Thinking over rich which tends to make motors "bog down".

Air filters are stock, I believe that the silencers are non standard as they are stamped "Busso" wonder if that might be having any effect.

For what it’s worth, my Strada was an absolute pig to start and would never idle. However, the the throttle response was always spot on. I changed the obscenely noisy, megaphone silencers (total contradiction) for a pair of “top/bottom seamed” original lookalikes from Mdina and it has transformed the machine. Starts first kick and idles perfectly when warm off choke albeit a bit fast 1800/2000 rpm. My point being the silencers have a massive impact on engine running and could therefore be a cause of poor throttle response/flat spots.

To my opinion the Bussos are a quite good Alternative if you don't have the original Lafranconis. I used them for years with a 350 S motor without any problem

Air filtration and exhaust backpressure have quite a bearing on the correct performance of these bikes.

Thanks for that you have put my mind at ease re the silencers and air filtration side of things.

Going to leave carburation well alone for now, as I say just dont give it big handfulls - job for the winter months.

It starts and idles fine by the way, usually 1st or 2nd kick, or a couple of turns of the electric starter.
