Yesterday I went for a ride to the Trough of Bowland. I went through Preston as I wanted to call into Ghost bikes to look at gloves. In the usual heavy Preston traffic the bike got very hot and started to misfire pulling away from a light stop the engine would stutter I thought it was just the traffic but when I got onto the open road it was still stuttering.

I stopped at the Trough and the engine wouldn't start luckily I was at the top so got it running by rolling down the hill. I stopped a couple more times on way back and it was very hard to get it running lots of starter motor and kicking needed.

Bike has been running fine but the previous ride out I noticed it just needed a bit more time to start it's usually a first time start.

I am assuming ignition because carb trouble in my experience comes on gradually not 30 miles into a ride.

Plugs and caps are almost new and I haven't touched anything else in the ignition department. Carbs ultrasonic cleaned about April time and new air filters and fuel hose fitted about same time. Done about a thousand kilometres since

Look at the magneto coil, it might need rewinding. One of mine did the same and then just failed requiring the trailer of shame.

I have checked both spark plugs and they both have very weak weedy sparks. I have checked the resistance of the green wire from the generator as specified in fig 174 page 97 of the blue book. It should show 300 ohms but is only reading 130 ohms. The blue book just says replace stator if there's a low reading but doesn't say what a low reading is.

Also the blue book says to use a discharger to test the generator wire. Fig 173 page 97 but I have no idea what a discharger is and Google just shows me pictures of household wiring.

What is a discharger and do I need to get one.

Ma experience is that starting problems begin with less than 170-180 ohm on the ignition coil/green wire. I´ve never had a coil with 300 ohm.

When I got my 350 it was not an easy starter but ran OK. The ignition coil gave a reading of around 175 ohms.
Post rewind it was in the upper 200’s. It then started easily.

So I am a bit confused by the mention of coils. I thought I was testing the stator. I can't find mentions of coils only transducers.

I really struggle understanding electric and electronics it's like I have electric dyslexia. Give me a gearbox or a crankshaft and I am fine.

Do I need to replace or repair the stator or the transducer/coil

I was talking about the "ignition coil" of the stator. Normaly it´s the one that is wrapped in a yelloy plasic foil. From this coil goes the gren wire to the boxes under the tank via the central electric port under the right side cover. All the other coils of the stator don´t have any influence on the igninicion system

Ah got you in pictures I can see the ignition coil on the stator. It looks like I am going to have to get either a new stator or get mine rewound.

Any tips on a firm to rewind the stator I have heard of Rex's speed shop any others.

West Country Windings did a couple for me. Not sure they still do them.

Someone just posted on the Morini FB group that they had just had one done by WCW. "Brilliant service".

Ignition winding looks a bit manky but I can't see if the blue smoke has escaped. I will be sending it to Rex's speed shop when I get a response from them.

How do I store the rotor I have a faint memory of my dad saying that the magnets can lose power if they are stored the wrong way.
