speedo drive
speedo drive
Hello - does the outer worm drive part of the speedo drive come apart by undoing the hex part where the cable enters it? wheel is apart and the drive feels a bit gritty so thought I would strip it to clean it. However it does not seem to want to move- and I don't want to force it. Anther poster recently talked about packing this with grease - what type should I be using here? thanks - Duncan

Re: speedo drive
Hi Dunc,
The 'worm' certainly does come out of the drive hub. Should be a straightforward 'undo brass nut where cable connects and draw it out'.
If it feels gritty however, this is probably why it isn't moving on yours. Try washing the whole thing out with petrol (rotate the worm as you do so) and blowing dry with an airline and try again.
As for grease, I used ordinary 'Castrol HM' grease because that is what I have a tub of , but I'm sure any general purpose grease will do, eg. Use whatever is in your grease gun for the swinging arm bushes.
Regards,
George

Re: speedo drive
thanks - the brass nut certainly doesn't want to move and I don't want to force it as it doesn't feel like a particularly sturdy part, I have cleaned it and washed it out several times from the inside and it now seems to be moving fine so will leave the rest well enough alone.

Use a deep thin wall socket after pouring boiling water over the housing to expand the alloy.
