What I found in my oil

Post by MickeyMoto »

Building a 350 engine (I bought a bottom end and am putting my top end on) I drained the oil (I was informed there was no oil in the sump) 2.5 lires fell out. Undid the oil filter housing, drained that and then had a look. What is that piece of metal? Out with the magnet and hey presto a woodruff key!

Decided to take the clutch cover off to check the oil pump as I think, apart from the big square key that drives the primary drive, is the only key on the 'oily' side of the engine. Found to be in tact and working.

Can clean off the copious quantities of hermitshite liberally applied everywhere, including the oil drain bolt. I hate that stuff with a passion.

Off to t'interweb to place an order for seals and gaskets. Keep me occupied for a while longer. Garden - done, car - cleaned and washed, house dusted - again, spuds - planted. Need something as I have been told the oven needs a clean. The plans to decorate the kitchen have been abandoned due to the non-supply of paint. Every cloud has a silver lining.

The only thing I can think of that is key like is a gear tooth. I've had one break off of a cog many years ago.

Just a thought.

I did think of that, but it is too regular. I'll have a look with my mirror.

A simple check as to whether it is a gear tooth or a woodruff key is to run a file over it. Woodruff keys are normally soft and can be filed, whereas a gear tooth will be rather hard.
If it is a woodruff key, it could have got there when a former owner was refitting the cam with the keys still in it - it could have caught on the bearing and 'pinged ' inside?

I've got some paint that I could send up to you for your kitchen, Mickey  .
Good luck with the woodruff key investigation - don't you just love a good mystery  .

Hi Charles,

Yes, especially an excuse to spend more time in the garage. My wife hasn't killed me... Yet!

I'll pass on the paint, she wants yellow, I notice in your Speedo post you have green...

Look after yourselves... :)

So, I went out to the garage and got out the old Bastard. The piece of metal filed easily so can safely say it is not a gear tooth. The oil pump turns, the camshaft turns when I turn the crankshaft. I'll check the keyways on both, just in case. Thanks for the advice.

Maybe one fell out of the crank or camshaft backalong and if the filter was already removed dropped into the crankcase, then a previous owner spent ages looking on the garage floor for it.
Let’s hope the ones that should be fitted are all there.
I have had a day away from fiddling with bikes, the only thing left is repaint the fork sliders black with something suitable.
I even fixed my fridge- there is now beer in it ,and decoked the Suffolk.
Am suffering from MD- motorcycling deficiency.

This is for John.
With the current 'lockdown', and only essential journeys to be made, I have begun doing the shopping run on the bikes. Big advantage is you can't carry as much on a bike as in the car so you have to ride more and have time to enjoy the empty roads. Add in the guaranteed 'social distancing' when out on the bike and it seems like a winner to me!

I'm not supposed to even leave the house or go in a shop for 12 weeks, so have no excuse to get a bike out, including the Husky with only 150 miles on the clock.

Yes, a good idea to use the bike, but do not have an accident.

Would you want to be taken to the Emergency Department (ED) with patients full of Covid-19? Or worse, in two weeks when all those idiots who visited their elderly parents on Mothers' Day have spread the virus far and wide and the ED has no capacity and you turn up wanting urgent treatment. Forget it, too busy.

Ride carefully everybody who decides to go out. :) I have SORN'd my bikes and my Historic Vehicle is in bits having it's oil leaks looked at. I have an excuse NOT to go out. I have also decided NOT to ride my bicycle at the moment, either. Dog Walking is my exercise of choice. I broke my hand running once, so that is out...

Agree, I just walk at the crack of dawn, usually with a rucksack full of the wife’s beer bottles to the recycling bin and back just 2 miles all in, and then dodge anyone I meet.
The line about breaking your hand reminded me of my old boss back in Swindon who bought a bullworker and pulled a muscle in his arm getting it out of the box.
I intend to keep away from our Hospital having been in them for 43 years so won’t consider riding.

So, the engine is together now. Three attempts to get the clutch side completed, but glad I found the FOD. I have now replaced all the seals on the clutch side and the oil pump rubber and o-ring. Attempt one, kick start shaft not fully home so case was askew. Attempt two, side casing fits perfectly, bolted up and about to push in the clutch centre thingy when I realised I had replaced the big washer next to the bearing the wrong way round! I fitted it the way it came off but it was back to front. The chamfered side goes against the bearing and it makes sense, as it will turn with the bearing. The washer has been wearing where the centre of the bearing has been rubbing it. Off with the side casing, reset the f%^&*(g kickstarter again and all bolted up. Hylomar out again, shims and special washers fited, clutch centre in, plates in and bolt up. Hmmm, what's this? Oh, the clutch pushrod. I put it to one side to clean it up as it was catching on the new nut rubber. Pressure plate off, what a faff, glad I have a decent clutch screw driver. Next job is to remove the 3FD engine from the 1FD and bolt in the engine. The 3FD engine can be put in the frame and that is then 99% complete. No chance of an MoT, so no chance of registering.

Might as well see if I can get some fork oil and change that next. Still got to unmothball the Scrambler, but that will start first press. Just the chain to clean and check the brakes and head bearings.

ps I notice Mdina only do a seal kit and not individual seals. This does not include the oil pump parts or the clutch centre, but these are available separately.
