Confused by Red wires.

Post by Morinijen »

Hi Everyone.
I recently bought a new regulator (or VCR as they call it) from NLM as my old one was not working at all. (They tested it while I was there).

They enclosed a note with the VCR showing how to wire it up and at the time I didn't think it would be difficult, but now I am a little confused.

The note said:
VCR to suit Moto Morini 350/500.
Suits single or bi-phase.

1. Red if you have one.
Bi-phase only.

2. Yellow (either).

3. Yellow (either).

4. Use loom supplied to Red at fuse-box.

5. Brown from fuse-box (existing).

6. Earth.

Here are a couple of pictures which hopefully show what I'm going on about...

I've got Red, Green and two Yellows coming from the alternator.
Presumably the two Yellows go into the VCR and the Red and Green go into the fuse-box? Is that right?

The Brown wire from the fuse-box must go to pole number 5 on the VCR, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with the Red wires.

Do I need that extra bit of Red wire they supplied?.. And if so, where does it go?

Forgive my ignorance but I haven't got a clue what bi-phase means.

Any help gratefully received.

Yours, confused,
Jenny.

First of all don't dump the original regulator if you still have it. They can often be repaired.

The green wire from the alternator is the high voltage for the ignition and has nothing to do with charging.

If you have two yellow and one red wire from the alternator, then you have a bi-phase (centre tapped) alternator. Connect all three wires to the new regulator; Red - 1, Yellows - 2 & 3.

You already have a red wire coming from the fuse box, connect it to terminal 4.
