Colours

Post by Bison »

Folks,
Just out of interest, did the factory ever make Sports in any other colour apart from red/black?. I'm referring to the first cast wheel models up to say around 1979?.
Thanks,
Alan.

Hi Alan.
Apart from the first electric start models (1979) which were all red, including the frame, I can only recall Sports in red and black. I've been interested in Morini since 1976 and a sport owner since 1978.
There may have been other colours before this, but in the pre Internet days all we saw were what were imported here, so Italy or Germany might have got other options but I never saw one.
I did see a yellow / black sport in the late'80's, but it was so clean I'm sure that it was a respray.
Oddly, the ' dowdier' Strada came in a variety of metallic colours - red, blue, silver and gold among others.
Others might come along soon and prove the above is rubbish of course!
Regards, George.

No, I think you're right George. I was also lusting after a Morini from 1974 and bought mine in 1977. Can't remember any other colours for the Sports either. As for yellow ones, mine had a period in yellow and so did one other I know of at least. Both were owner repsrays. Oh yes, mine also had a couple of years in black and white ( ) and a big alloy tank that was purple too ( ) I can't explain those choices either, and I never have done drugs!

George,
Pretty much what I thought. It was really just interest, as I know the Morini riders aren't really of the "rivet counter" persuasion so there are many and varied colours around, my 77 is orange for example. I've just got a late 78, which is electric start and red with black frame, no black panel on the tank just a white coach line. I don't think it's going to stay red, as it's more rust than paint, but you never know.

As you say, no-one will complain! Do it how it pleases you. Red with white stripes might also be it's original colours too. Whatever you do, enjoy doing the job and then enjoy riding it! They really are great fun.

Black with gold pin striping looks really good. I recall Chris Chapman from Somerset doing this to his in the early 1980s, and to a standard that made it look like a factory paint scheme. He also hill climbed Morini, and so they went as well as they looked.

As noted, what ever takes your fancy works - just make sure it gets ridden!
