marzocchi steering head

Post by mad muller »

when adjusting the steering head, I noticed with the pinch bolt tight in the top clamp the large bolt in the middle could still be turned , as if the allen bolt in the clamp is paying no affect, iam thinking this cant be right, any thoughts on this appreciated. muller.

Hi Paul,
No it can't be right. The pinch bolt should be able to nip up the large alloy bolt as otherwise a/ the steering head bearings could loosen off, and b/ the forks could move a little fore and aft giving interesting steering. It won't need much movement to cause an issue. Are there any signs of the alloy bolt being reduced in size?
George.

The thread on the steering stem top-nut or bolt is quite fine, particularly in the case of the nut and gives you a lot of mechanical advantage to push the top yoke down.

I'm sure more than one set of steering head bearings have been damaged because someone thought the nut was too loose.

If you're concerned about how well the top yoke grips the steering stem, check that independently.
