new noise of misery

Far be it from me to expect to describe a noise and elicit a meaningful reponse. However I decide to get the 350 out yesterday.Last ridden to north Devon and back a week ago where it ran perfectly well. Started it up and...what's this...... a loud metallic clank, can't decide if it is at engine speed or half engine speed. I think the latter.
It seemed to vibrate too. I quickly stopped having the memory of a con rod letting go on a T160 uppermost in my mind.
So, checked the easy stuff like engine mount bolts, clutch centre nut( the last thing I've touched recently). I have to drain oil and examine, followed by a gradual strip down to look for something loose, worn or damaged.(a bit like me I suppose) i guess I can remove the barrels and see if i can pull a piston up or down ... Boo! It'll have to wait for a couple of weeks anyhow.
I put the bike away and turned around to see the headlamp cover glass on my old R100RS had shattered from a stone chip picked up the day before.Boo again. At least I have a spare of those.

Turn the flywheel back and forward, you'll feel how much free play there is between crank, big-ends, little ends, ring grooves etc.

With the clutch cover off you can hold the clutch whilst turning the flywheel and feel for play in the primary gears. The oil pump drive isn't keyed to the crank and is just friction driven by its retaining nut (presumably to save the crankcases in the event of pump seizure). With the pump drive loose, the primary gear can fret.

Thanks Paul
I had a chance this evening so pulled the flywheel cover off. If i grab the flywheel I think I get some very slight movement side to side/up and down. it has a roller bearing on that side, about 4 years old. Will have to investigate after hols.
