End float

Hello Folks,
Can anyone inform me of what the end float should be on the gearbox main shaft of my 1977 Sport?.
I'm pretty sure it should be substantially less than the 1.5mm I can move the sprocket in and out!. I have a feeling a spacer has been left out when the previous owner built the engine/box up.
