clutch studs

I'm replacing the studs in a clutch centre as 4 are mullered (looks like they worked loose at some point, bent and scores on the cover!).
Obviously they need to be screwed in then peened over, so my question is the best way to peen them? I was going to use a long socket slipped over the stud to support the centre. Or do I just work with the studs on a firm surface (threads protected with nuts? Finally should I heat the stud prior to peening?
