Rusty Petrol Tanks need a 77 Strada tank help

Hi all
Tank of to my normal shot blasters who are gentle (had at least 6 done over the years) with the job, came back looking ok but at the rear a bit thinner.
The tank had not been leaking but was a bit rough so thought before paint this would give a good base, cleaned up and used POR15 to coat the inside when as I rotated the tank some sealer leaked out of the rear section.
I know people say this stuff seals small pin holes and seams but it would be a bit worrying to use as an everyday ride so I am looking for a solid tank mine is the round type, it does not need to be pretty as paintwork is no problem having done several but cannot see it being welded as the sealer would need doing again?
The area of bad rust is only a about three inches from the rear seam so if anyone can suggest a welder that would be a great help.
Cheers Coventrykid

Hi trying to use patch with POR15 on it as the tank is holding fuel will let the forum know how good it is for an everyday bike in a while. still up for buying another tank if one is out there.
Cheers Coventrykid

Hello, I used POR15 about 10 yrs ago in my Morini tank; I followed the instructions to the letter when using it and thought it had done an ok job. I've not used the bike much (ahem) since then but a few yrs ago the POR15 started to lift at the bottom of the tank, I can see this by looking with a torch through the filler hole as I have emptied the tank of petrol.

When I got the tank painted 10 yrs ago it was welded at the back 'corner', could be the same area as yrs, guess it's just where moisture stays 'trapped' in the fuel perhaps. The people that welded it for me were Dream Machine who painted the tank. The weld is fine. Dream Machine did a good job of painting to OE colours/design etc.

I'm not convinced any of these liquid tank liners do the job, as has been said on many forums etc the higher(?) concentration of Ethanol in most of the petrol that is sold is just no good at all.

With regard to welding (light fabrication co.), if you live in Coventry I'd have thought there would be quite a few people that could do it for cash , or why not ask the Shot blasters if they know anyone?

Hi Thanks for the reply I am going to try to get it welded tomorrow, wish I had not put the sealer in as it was not to bad.
Incidentally a Ducati 900 ss I had years ago had a sealer in the tank as it sat for a year unused before I got it to my best knowledge its still ok thats about 7 years ago.
Will let you know how it go's

Hi again
Well tried the tank without welding after letting the por15 dry for a week and no leaks at all, in fact held it up with fuel lying in the rear of the tank for two nights with no sign. I have painted the tank now in light blue metallic with black inlay and looks really good I will post a picture when I work out how this evening.

POR 15 is pretty good stuff for lining good tanks so they don't start to rust, but I've found it will leak/peel if fuel or weather can get to both sides. A better choice, if you can get it, it Caswell tank sealer - it's a 2 part epoxy that is compatible with gasoline/alcohol. It is much thicker than POR ot Kreem which makes it harder to apply, but also better at sealing leaky bits. interestingly, it actually stiffened a rather flexible Fiberglas tank I used it on.

But keep in mind, any tank sealer is only as good as its prep:

I'll take that with a pinch of salt

Hi.
I'm a bit late here but I just ordered a few secondhand spares from a guy in Stasbourg.
My main interest was the tank he was offering but it turned out to be no good for me as I need the later push on type.

This is a 1977 tank, bolt on.

He doesn't specify anything else but NLM told me last week that all 350 tanks are the same (ie, Sport or Strada) except the means of fixing.

He wanted €80 and it was still available last weekend.

If you would be interested I'll send him a mail and ask condition etc.

Cheers,
Mark.
