Somewhere between Cadwell Park and Cambridge, there's a Veglia speedo lying in the gutter, almost certainly smashed and flattened.



It was definitely there when I strapped the bike onto the trailer, but it was gone 120 miles later when I got home.

Having now looked at what is left, the only thing that was holding it in place was the speedo cable and the wiring to the bulb that lights - lit - it up at night. The 90 degree drive box seems to have cracked and failed, releasing the instrument from the pod it's sat in for the last 32 years.

So does anyone know the drive ratio of the speedo, and maybe the tachometer (mine is a cable drive one) so that I can start to look for a replacement?

I can have a look in my box of spares.. should be a spare speedo somewhere

It's black, and I also need the... there must be a better word... ring-piece that fits the round speedo into the squarish housing.

If you have one that's fantastic, but I've now started looking at alternatives, hence the question about drive ratios.

What's most annoying is that I've been comparing speedos on various bikes against a GPS one, and the Veglia on the Morini was surprisingly accurate...

That's really annoying. I lost my keys except the ign key, when the fob disintegrated but found most of them in the road 2 days later.
Guess you could investigate a trail tech unit and remove the whole existing instruments.

That's a bummer, especially after having thrashed around Cadwell without incident.

The plastic 90 degree adaptors always seem to crack, I have jubilee clips on mine holding them together, but I may have the rubber bit I'll look, I think NLM have them if need be.

It would be interesting to see what the alternatives are as lots of us have KPH speedos and rev counters with a mind of their own!

How did the emulators work out.

I'll have a look... don't have a spare rubber piece but unreal has got that covered

Thanks for all the offers of help and bits everyone, I'm heartened at the generousity.

I'm going to research the alternatives as there are some quite reasonably priced but function packed (A trip meter!) digital speedos out there these days and at the moment I'm leaning towards one of those.

[Emulators] That's a whole other and as yet unfinished story. I had way too much rebound damping and (initially) too high an oil level which had the effect of stiffening the forks to 70s Ducati levels. Ie, virtually solid and very, very harsh.

Once the oil level was lowered and the preload was about right, we hit the problems you'd expect with too much rebound damping; I was getting pattering from the forks on the brakes and while it was really good at the point where you're easing the brakes off and turning in, it was all a bit Pete Tong flicking through the chicane and to a certain extent in the Gooseneck.

Reducing the damping involves enlarging a 1mm diameter hole as I'm already using 2.5W oil, and that's the next step. I'll be writing it all up for the RealClassic website and will post details on here too.

I do wonder now if the harshness of the forks loosened something in the speedometer department while I was doing initial runs round the local very bumpy roads...

Hi Martin, searched through all my boxes and I'm afraid no speedo rubbers, it's not like me to bin stuff so maybe they too shot. I'm sure I bought the new ones from NLM (a couple of years ago).
