Fork assembly

Post by bobajob »

Hi,

I’m putting the forks back together on my 76 Strada and wanted to check I’ve got the parts the right way round.

The attached photo shows a short tube that buts onto a longer tube, I’m assuming I’ve got this the right way round with the flared end of the shorter tube fitting over the rounded end of the longer tube. I’m pretty comfortable this is correct although.

The bit that I‘m puzzled about is the spacer that was on top of the shorter tube when I dismantled the forks. This part isn’t shown on the exploded diagram in the ‘blue book’. All I can think of is that either this was added by a previous owner to stiffen up the forks or my forks are slightly different from the ones in the diagram. I understand there were two different types of fork so this may be the case.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this.

Rob

My guess is someone has added it for a little pre-load or to compensate for age compressed springs. The order looks right though.

Thanks Simon, I think you're right. I've now got to decide if I put it back together as was or replace the springs. I only rode it for a couple of hundred miles before I stripped it down but was happy with the way the bike handled so may just put it back together but maybe it cold be even better! When you start rebuilding it can be never ending.

Any one know how much a pair or new springs are?
