Charging fault

Post by brianh0_4 »

Hi all,
Anyone had a problem charging the battery with the lights ON?
I had tested the yellow wires off the generator and found one not working. A solder connection from one of the coils was bad. With that resoldered and checked all looked good. But a 50 mile ride today(fast, no traffic) revealed, low batterry voltage on returning home.
Testing power to the battery, i get 14vdc at high revs (rev counter is a bit hit and miss, usually shows low revs) with the lights OFF. Put the lights ON, and i only get 11.5 at most!!
I did the amps lights ON test as per the 'Blue' book, and it was within limits.
So any ideas??? Could it be the regulator?? how can i test it seperatly??

Thanks, Brian.

Standard bulbs? I tried a 45w halogen in mine as it has a cibie unit. The poor old 100w alternator couldn't balance the load properly even at high revs.

Is the amps test an 'in line' one like the good old days of the -8 0 +8 needle on a dial units found on british bikes? I had one lying about and so put it between battery and main feed to check. Fortunately I found a source of 35w H4 bulbs and now all is well.

I suspect it could be the reg/rec unit but someone who knows will be along soon. I did once have a problem when the ignition would misfire with the lights on but was fine with them off. A rewind cured that.

old italian electrics.... and an underpowered generator...
if you want certainty you can install this: http://www.elektronik-sachse.de/content ... hp?lang=en
Will set you back quite a few euro's but from personal experience with installing the Sachse ignition kit on a friends bike I can tell this is one of the best ignitions on the market today! A custom system from Sachse will be on the turbo too...

First thing is to check your earths.

The regulator 'sees' battery voltage on the brown wire via the ignition switch. Not charging at all can be a faulty ignition switch.

Remagnetising the rotor is always a good move.

Try swapping the yellow wires from connection to connection it can make a big difference a good one with standard
bulbs will be over 13V at 3000 rpm.

at first it's running lights off you can see the needle flick when I turn them on this is after fitting a NLM reg.

You may also find this of interest from when I was buggering about with mine.

Thanks for all your replys.
I am taking my time going through the wiring. I am not sure that the 'new' last year battery is the fault. It gets to full voltage on recharge then drops to 12.5v and stays there. If i put a bulb across it for 60 second the volts go to 12.2!!???
