Hi Hendre, thanks for the info. Does not look too difficult a job and probably worth it to give my little engine a happier life down here in the heat.
Thanks

Before wasting a whole load of effort fitting an oil cooler, why not do something much simpler, like fitting an oil temperature gauge.
The oil strainer cover is an obvious place.

Hi Paul, sounds easier but sorry to ask......any ideas how exactly i would do that? And obvious question but what sort of temperature should the oil be?
Thanks, Tony

Ah ok, i seem to have sussed it myself. Buy a suitable sender, drill/tap suitable hole in cover, wire to gauge. Does sound simple. But not sure on temp, does around 80 sound about right?

Hi Tony,
Re: the ideal oil temp. For older oils meeting the spec SF-CD, typically mineral oils described as suitable for older cars, the upper limit before carbonising occurs is about 140 degC. For more modern fully synthetics (SF-CJ+) it is around 180 degC. Semi synthetics are somewhere in between. A good working range is between 90 and 120 degrees. Any lower and unburnt fuel and water from blowby will not evaporate properly from the oil.
Bear in mind that Morini's are Italian, and it regularly reaches 38-40 degrees ambient (occasionally even higher) in summer, and Morini are known for their robust engines, the need for a cooler is questionable. In my view, it is only if the engine is covered by a fairing (eg. the Dart) or you are super tuning it when you would need a cooler. Remember that cold oil costs you power with the extra friction!
Regards,
George

Hi George,
Hmmm that's a very good point i'd never thought about that, maybe i'm worrying about nothing. Thanks for the advice.
Cheers, Tony
