Strada with twin disc front forks

I've just bought a scruffy 1977 strada that has been off the road for 12 years.

It has twin disc forks but the cast wheel is for a single disc. I'm sure these are not original, did the sport have a twin disc option or are could the forks be from a 500? I'm tempted to try and find the parts to convert to twin discs but I suspect the wheel will be expensive and difficult to source. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I also think one of the clocks is not original as the rev counter doesn't have moto morini on it but the speedo does. I reckon it's had front end damage and has been repaired with hat ever parts were available.

I've got the bike up and running and MOT'd and it's a great ride, absolutely love it :-)

Hi Bobajob,

No that all looks standard. If you remove the speedo drive you'll see the heads of the bolts which hold the disc on, on the other side on. All you need is some longer bolts and another disc.

The speedo drive will then need to be trimmed down to fit. Once you've removed the speedo drive you'll see that they've very nicely cast it so it's easy to do. My 1980 cast wheel Strada came, brand new, with the second disc fork leg already in place, just like yours. It should have had only one disc fork leg, but as was usual at Morini I think they just fitted the forks they had in stock at the time.

Cheers

Pete

I think I still have a disc and caliper somewhere...

Early disc braked Stradas came with just a single caliper mounting, but it really made more sense for Morini to stock just one fork assembly. The single disc is more than adequate, but often very wooden in feel due to the mastercylinder being too big (16mm). The one from the 250 works well (14mm).

Guys,

Thanks for the excellent info. I think I'll leave it as it is for the time being, ride it for a while and see how I get on.

Working on the bike along with the help from this site and the spares backup from NLM is a breath of fresh air after a succession of elderly Jap bikes.

cheers
