Iffy Rev counter?

Post by George 350 »

Hi All,

Since I have got my bike back on the road, (with another crank, stator & flywheel) the rev counter has misbehaved. Before it worked perfectly, but now as soon as it hits 5000rpm it goes straight to 8-9500rpm. I have tried another rev counter from the Strada and it behaves exactly the same. I then tried swapping the feed from front to rear transducer and again there is no change. This leaves the stator unit as the thing that has changed, but why should this affect the rev counter?
New VCR from NLM makes no difference - battery voltage nice and steady at 13.8V whenever above 2500rpm.
Any clues?

George.

OK All,

Tried Brians advice and ran a new earth - no change.
Now found out what it was. After the visit to the Morini North Thames meet last month, I found that my alternator was barely charging - OK on parking lights, not ok with headlight. (The A507 is not a nice road at night with only sidelights available!)
I fitted the new stator I had bought (to replace the burned out one lunched by a failed main bearing mentioned in another post) together with the correct flywheel for it and bingo! the rev counter now works perfectly! Another bonus is that it now ticks over happily at 1500rpm, whereas before it would only idle continuously at 1800rpm.
Oh well, yet another job to be done before I can get the Strada back on the road...
