Ignition system??

I've been trying to fully understand the ignition system on my 3.5 "78 Strada with the 6 pole ign switch. This is what I think I know!!

A single winding on the stator powers the ignition.
The system is entirely independent of the battery.
Condensers in the transducers are charged up until triggered by the pick up signal
There is a separate pick up circuit for each transducer

What I'm not sure of is how is the pick up powered?
With this system shouldn't the bike start without the use of the key? :|

The pickup is in itself a little generator, so it's in effect self powered.

The bike will run (all other things being well) if the green wire from the high voltage coil on the alternator is NOT grounded. Depending on model, there will be a green wire to the ignition switch and maybt another to the kill switch that prevent the engine running.

Thanks Paul that's brilliant now I get it  - it's been driving me mad. It also solves a mystery with the ignition switch positions that's had me baffled.
I assumed the middle of the three positions ( 6 pole switch) was OFF because none of the terminals connected to each other at all! In fact the bike will run because as you say the green wire is NOT grounded.

The 'forward' switch position connects the green to the blue wire (ground) and is the true OFF position.

But... what then is the middle position for? How will the brake light/ indicators work? or am I missing something obvious!! :?
