Hi All,
I have a few Qs around my Sport's weak spark. (It's in at the local Ducati dealer where they say the carbs also need an overhaul, BUT - they say my battery's knackered, so:
1) Am I right in believing this has nothing to do with a weak spark?
2) My coil reading was 170 ohms so am I right in thinking this needs a rewind to get up to the required 300? Is that all that's required to boot up the spark?
3) Does the health of the pickup have anything to do with spark strength? (The transducers are pretty new.)
4) Where on earth do Morinisti find suitable (ie straight) plug-caps without a resistor?
Cheers,
DD

Re: Weak spark questions
When I had my stator rewound that was reading only 175 ohms it transformed the starting and running. That was combined with a re-magnetised rotor and new type NLM 'transducrers' though. Still on an OEM red pickup. In my experience the pickup either works or doesn't, so means no spark at all rather than a weak spark, sometimes just on one cylinder.
The resistance is not a completely reliable diagnostic, but it's fair to say that the stator coil is the heart of the system. If that's not pushing out a decent voltage at kick start speed starting is going to be harder.
The battery condition does not influence spark production.
I use NGK 5 K ohm resistor caps without problems with EVX plugs.
