Hi, doing a restoration on my 1979 sport and have to undo the sump plug. its a bit rounded after all these years , but I cannot make it budge without it getting in a worse state. I have used ring spanners sockets and mole grips so far . What do you all recommend ??

Firstly stay in bed a bit longer, 6.44am is no time to be posting.... Secondly get a new sump plug (from NLM) or wherever.

File/make some new flats/corners on the plug itself, get a socket hammered onto the plug (sacrifce socket if need be), then heat the case around the plug while trying to turn the plug. If there is still oil in the case then take care with the heat....

Should come with a bit of leverage on the socket!

Should be 18mm...
As posted above, cut a groove across it with a hacksaw blade and use a flat screwdriver or
chissel with wrench attatched.

Put a bottle jack or similar directly under the sump plug when the spanner is on it and pump it up until the full weight of the bike is on it, this can help to stop the spanner or socket from coming off the sump plug.
And make sure you are turning it the right way.

I had same problem and ended up totally messing ( word should have started with a f ) it up to the point were I cut it off flush, and now empty the oil through the small filter cover on the L/H side, and drain all the oil by laing bike over on side. Not ideal but it works, sometime in the future I suppose while it is on its side I will drill and remove with easy out but not just yet

Hi, I had a similar problem, I found both ring spanners and my sockets having multi faces wouldn't grip.

I dug out an old cheap socket set I had which had a simple hexagonal socket, because it was snug on the flats it didn't matter that the corners were rounded, used with a break-bar did the trick.
