Buying in Italy

I, like many of us, cruise ebay looking at euro sites. I’ve bought parts from Italy (including a brand new Valentini 2-1 still in its box recently!). But has anyone bought a complete bike in Italy and bought it back to the UK?

It seems that although we are in the EU free-trade is a myth when it comes to vehicles, guess it’s to stop stolen vehicle just disappearing.

I just find it very tempting, a 2 week holiday tour in a rental van, come home with enough toys to keep me entertained for years!

Most of the information and necessary links are here http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Bu ... DG_4022583
Worth noting that if the bike is over ten years old it doesn't appear to need the special 'vehicle approval' - just be able to pass an MoT. But these things change all the time and I haven't checked out all the links for the most current info ..

Good luck!

Old Morinis should be Ok as long as proof of age is available. In 2004 I made the mistake of buying a Voxan that had been registered in France in 2000 but only had 3 kms on the clock. Not 10 years old and not type approved for the UK so needed an MSVA test and an MoT because it was over 3 years old. Also treated as 'new' and subject to tax because of the low mileage even though 4 years old.
