Gearchange has become stiff

I was turning round at home and for some reason the momentum went, I lost balance and ended up in the gutter. When I righted myself and my bike I saw the linkage shaft on my Tarozzi rearsets had snapped right by the mount at the gearbox end. I made a fix using the old shorter linkage and two hose clips.
It worked well enough but when I fitted the new linkage rod my beautifully smooth gear-change action had disappeared. I've looked it over and can see nothing logical that accounts for it. It's stiffer changing down than up and feels almost normal around 3rd and 4th.
I don't know if this stiffness is due to whatever caused the bike to just lock up in the first place, or have I fitted the rod some wrong way but can't see why? It's not rubbing on anything I can see and all was okay with my roadside fix.
There's a tiny crack on the bar that holds the toe-lever but everything else is as sloppily loose, as is usual with Tarozzis.
Thanks in advance,
Dom
