Converting left shift to right for Tarozzi rearsets

Post by Highpiper »

Greetings to all...first post here. I recently picked up a '79 Morini 3.5 sport, with the left-side shifter retrofit on it for the North American market. Picked up Tarozzi rearsets to install on the bike, and realized that they're obviously made for the Euro set-up.

So, first order of business for me is to figure out exactly what the right-to-left shifter conversion entails, so that I can effectively "de-retrofit" the bike.

The bike...

The right-side shift linkage hidden beneath the right cover...

Looks like I have to remove the original pegs plus the crossover linkage below the cases, then install the left-side brake rearset with a new, shorter brake cable and kicker extender. Then remove the right-side shift setup and insert the rearset's longer shifter rod in place of the current shorter version.

Anyone on the forum had recent experience with de-retrofitting this type of set-up?

Thoughts, ideas, suggestions welcome. Cheers.

Peter

There is a technical article on installing Tarozzi rear sets (home page, old bikes, tech tips) - the Tarozzi's do not use any of the old gear change or brake set up so I would assume it can all be removed (though I've never seen the crossover set up).

Have fun - the gear change side (assuming right foot) is the easy bit - but well worth the effort.

Basically remove what you've got, keep the splined thingy on the end of the shift shaft, but turn it
around and fit it the other way. I had to grind off the mounting tab for the rear brake light switch on mine (1976),
but I see yours is different. The linkage on mine went to the front engine mounting plates and then over and back...
NLM sells a rear brake cable with an in-line switch if you need it.
