top end breathers
hello all, have noticed quite a lot of water out of head breather tubes and a bit out of the exhausts the breathers are also weeping emulsified oil .the bike was off the road for many years ,but has had new oil ,have done about 200 miles since getting it on the road, plugs look ok colour and theres nothing coming out of crankase breather, any advice on how to improve things and what oil is reccomended . iam useing a 10-40 semi synth car oil and standard spark plugs, many thanks paul.
Re: top end breathers
Perfectly normal product of combustion.Water will be driven off after a good blast to get the oil hot. I'd take a day off and get 100 miles of sightseeing in before the ice and snow come back.Speaking of which,I'm off to Alcaniz now......
Re: top end breathers
Make sure the crankcase breather pipe is correctly positioned so that water thrown from the rear tyre cannot enter into it.

Thanks ,for the feedback on this one will look at crank breather for posistion, maybe a good blast is in order. Probably too many short journeys to and from work. I dont know about a day off, and where is Alcaniz anyway? Can you get there on a B road? Thanks Paul
Re: top end breathers
If you are really concerned temorarily rig up a catch bottle for the breathers. You will hopefully find that very little oil, if any, is caught. When i was hill climbing my 2C/350 I had to have one to pass scrutineering. The only time I had to empty it was when the oil control rings broke up on both pots. A long story, but I suspect a foul up by the people who did a rebore for me. That's why it's now a 2C/375

thanks for the reply, like your goodself my tale is one of more morini woe, now smoking like a two stroke ,have stripped top end , only to find broken oil rings worn barrells, looks like iam heading down the same path, rebore and oversize pistons . what have i done to deserve this!
Re: top end breathers
Well it will be good when it's done. What causes the oil rings to break?

Re: top end breathers
i can only presume its the wear in the barrell , oil ring catches on groove that has worn into bottom of cylinder, so over a period of time el,snapo !
Re: top end breathers
I think the oil control rings on my 350 sport engine may be suffering the same fate as the front pot is smoking & there is an oily residue on that silencer. The rear pot seems fine though. I will have investigate asap. Does anybody know the correct torque for the head bolts for when I come to reassemble?

Re: top end breathers
yea, real bummer! ive got top end off needs rebore and pistons, bit of a dilema developing wether to strip the whole engine and do a full rebuild, the bottom end seems o.k. with no play in the big ends or mains, has anyone got any opinions on this? not sure about torque on head , i usually just tighten them down diagnoly a bit at a time till iam happy with them ,carefull not to overtighten or you could strip the threads. its probably in the blue book somewhere? while iam on, is it possible to connect an oil pressure gauge to engine ,by removing oil pressure switch and threading a gauge in, if so,what should oil pressure be? thanks to all for looking in.
Re: top end breathers
Many thanks for the link. Its saved me quite a few quid buying the manual. The torque settings are indeed in the blue book. I would also be interested in knowing what the usual oil pressure is. It seems a good idea to check it while the engine is still running, before stripping the top end, as it might point to whether the bottom end needs rebuilding while the engine is apart.
Re: top end breathers
I have oil pressure gauges fitted to all my Morinis (down to two now). Oil pressure cold 100psi at anything over 2000 revs dropping back to, on one bike, around the 80psi hot at 4000revs and 65psi at tick over 1350 revs. The other which has now done around 45,000 miles since I rebuilt the engine has 90ish at 2000revs cold and 45ish at tick over once hot. I also have full flow external oil filters fitted to stop the crank pins from clogging up the oil feed to the big ends.

Hi all Morini people, Thanks to Harry for getting in touch about the oil pressure, will have to further investigate and find myself a oil pressure guage as well as a good therapist for the nervous tic I am starting to develop!!
