Starter motor chain adjustment

Post by chirpy999 »

Had the starter motor out to top up the oil . What should the slack be on the chain?

I have tried moving the motor in various positions according to the manual when putting it back in the case but now have difficulty getting the long allen bolt to screw in to the case when i try to put it back together.

Any help appreciated

I bought a new chain as the old one seemed to be close to thrashing about on the inside of the cover.Even so when I have adjusted it to what seems OK I too cannot get the long bolt in.I now try trial and error, with the motor adjusted not quite enough to cause problems with the long bolt. It's NOT the best thing since sliced bread is it?
I fitted a new starter clutch(the later type) and this has dramatically reduced the unpleasant clattering noises the old one made.Someone said the starter motor gives as much trouble as the whole of the rest of the bike put together and I think I agree.

Fit an Odyssey battery, that cures many of the starters ills.

With a 13Ah Odyssey installed, my 500 doesn't even have the kickstart lever fitted.

Hi, where is the starter clutch??? I seem to remember the starter motor has a small sprocket which the chain fits on then the chain goes to the part that fits in the flywheel with the shoes on. I assume when you press the starter button the motor turns the chain which pushes the shoes onto the flywheel and fires the motor hopefully!!

A new chain might be the answer , any idea how much?? I have spent many hours fiddling with the adjustment to
try and get the long allen key in with no success.

Ev Guru the battery is a new Nitro I have checked out the odysseys just on Ebay they look alright . Looks like another spend .

That's it, it's a centrifugal clutch. The later stiffer/heavier shoes work better.

Make the adjustment with the bolt in place.

Which model Odyssey battery fits? I use these on my Ducati Monsters and they work great! I think I need one on the Morini if I ever hope to use the electric starter on it.

Not sure about chain adjustment but I just thought I'd add my comments about "rubbish" Morini starter motor "folklore" as my 350K starts first time every time on starter with no problems at all and no "special" battery either - must be down to the wizards at NLM!
