Thormagnus - what did you decide?

Post by Daddy Dom »

I'm sure I'm not alone in my curiosity - did it stay or did it go?

Hey DD!

First I should apologize to everyone. You've all been very helpful in sorting out what exactly is on my hands here. I guess I was so torn with what to do, (needed cash but didn't want to sell) that I just sort of put the bike out of mind. Good news is it worked! I'm keeping the bike and can't wait for finally getting her on the street. Without further ado...

The bike is still with my mechanic friend, Jon Have not yet ridden her. :( Jon has been great though! Very patient, thorough and exceedingly cheerful as everything he touches shows a new area of need. We originally thought that all that was needed was just battery, and carbs. Here's everything we've done to date:

New Belt - Found a couple different parts. Went with a Gates belt but also found that Herdan had them in stock for $30US. The new belt was a good fit. Old belt (an OE replacement) deflection was 3.72mm the new one is 3.4mm.

Cark kits, float needles, fuel filters all from Eurotrash Jambalaya in San Jose. This place even has OEM brake cables if anyone is looking.

Turned out there was a burnt wire in the fuse box going to the stator.

Did the valve and carb adjustment. Also new rocker cover gaskets.

The frame was cut and the kickstand was re-welded. Jon speculates for racing clearance? We really had no idea. The newer kickstand was short, stubby and the weld was cracking. Got this fixed up and now she stands up tall and proper.

Jon found some wiring information here on the Tres e mezzo, and went through cleaning the grounds points on the frame. There's some missing electronics we're sorting through.

The tach was unplugged and the needle melted. Actually, the needle on the speedo melted too. It drags against the glass preventing it from moving...Do these open up? Or do I need a full replacement guages?

Having a few problems with the carbs hoping its just that they need to be rejetted. Right now it's stock jetting with aftermarket exhaust and different than OEM filters. Most info we've found on the forum says people have had no problems.

Cool find: the frame number and engine number MATCH! Emissions sticker with the date "1975 February"

Fired her up recently, she's sounding great. Unfortunately, the choke lever crumbled. Got a new lever from Eurotrash. Herdan didn't have any.

The throttle cables seemed long so Jon contacted Herman from Herdan looking for new ones. Guess this is not original either. Herman says it should be 2 cables from grip to carbs, mine has 3. Not sure why.

Clutch plates. The plates, clutch hub, clutch basket and springs were rusted. As the bike sat it rusted the back sealing lip of the clutch basket. Jon did his best and cleaned up most of it. Gonna need more new parts though. This has been really hard to find. Still working on these parts. Going start a new thread for that.

That's pretty much it to date. Good news is we're gonna keep her! Bad news is that I've neglected updating you all. Sorry! It's taking a while but Jon has been a saint and is keeping her dried up in a garage while the rain starts to fall in Southern CA.

Currently not in a hurry. I think she's in great hands and want to let him take his time. Hunting for and importing parts is slow business. I'm shopping for the finishing touches now: blinker, mirrors, plate holder that kind of stuff.

Any tips or feedback would be greatly appreciated. I know Jon frequents the site looking for advice as he goes. So posting links to old threads you might have found useful would be tremendously appreciated.

I promise to follow this more closely again. Thank you all for everything so far. There will be pics once this baby is all done.

Cheers!

Hey TM,
don't sweat the delays, you're a Morini owner now. 8) If you weren't patient before, you will be now. (And I don't necessarily mean in a bad way.)

Sounds like you have well and truly embarked on "the journey" so my congratulations go to you and Jon. I'm sure you'll receive lots of great advice and encouragement from this board. You may also want to join the "smoke list", I think you'll find the email address in a few Morini Club links pages.

Have fun out there,
Dom
