Flywheel puller, need some help with this one please.

Post by blackenzo »

I am getting ready to change my timing belt on a newly acquired '76 strada with kickstart. As you know, I'll have to pull the flywheel, but I can find zero information about the size of flywheel puller that is needed.

The following german site mentions a 27m x 1.5 RH, but I can not find that size anywhere. http://www.angelfire.com/mo2/sr500/Zahn ... iemen.html

Any advice? Thank you.

Well for starters, you could try North Leicecster Motorcycles. Rumour has it that they have a few Morini bits.

Secondly, there are details of the 'special tools' right here on the club website;

The puller thread (27 X 1.25 RH) is pretty common and I've heard the cheapest source is MZ dealers, or possibly KTM.

When you come to pull the flywheel, make sure you remove the spring washer from behind the flywheel nut and screw the puller fully home. Oil the threads to make it easier and make sure the centre bolt is backed well out. Use an air or electric impact wrench to pull the flywheel. Beating on the end of the puller with a hammer risks brinelling the main bearing(s).

And when replacing the rotor check before you do that the generator wires are not rubbing on the little bracket attached to a stator retaining bolt(if fitted) that holds the loom in place. Mine was beginning to go through the outer sleeve.
Make sure you clean the taper faces of any greasy fingerprints etc. I've epoxied some alloy mesh to the inside of the front vent area to try and minimise the ingress of any road chippings but I worry lest it comes off whilst travelling.
