Flasher Relay...

Indicators gave up the ghost on my 1977 Sport and it appears that the flasher relay (original CEV InterMezza!) has finally decided to take a well earned rest. Could go to NLM but what fits from the Halfords (or other) shelves and do the electronic ones help stabilise the flasher speed which gets hyper on the motorway.

Ok I could avoid the motorway, but it seems better to sort them out with modern technology if it works. Do any fit neatly in the space where the original relay goes - can't find anything on the forums through the search function, but clearly people have changed the relay over the recent past.

Suggestions welcome.

Popped to Halfrauds and got simple 2 pin unit and now have flashers. Quick cable tie to hold in place, not quite as neat as the original but fine for the moment.

Anyone have electronic suggestions though to give better stabilisation??

The flash rate getting much faster on the motorway (sustained high revs) suggests that your regulator may be putting out too much voltage.

It's worth checking to avoid damaging the battery and the bike too if acid ends up all over the frame.

Yes, was concerned about that - stuck a meter on and battery gets up to about 14.3V with (as yet) no sign of the battery bubbling. Suspect a Zener or something similar would help to restrict voltage, but as Miss M is a fine weather item then I won't rush to do anything. Might wander up to the bike electrics place in Ilkeston sometime - nice roads around there - and see what the latest options are.

The tollerance on Morini regulators does vary. 14.3v isn't that high, but what's it like at 6000rpm?

Measure the voltage on the brown wire to the regulator. That's the voltage sense/regulator enable wire and passes through the ignition switch.

DON'T try and limit the output voltage with a zenner, you'll just overload the regulator/alternator. Morini regulators are not like most motorcycle alternator charging systems, it's a controlled rectifier and in effect dissconnects the alternator when the battery voltage is too high, rather than dumping the excess energy as heat.

Hi,
just replaced the electromechanical CEV unit on my 350 Sport with an electronic unit ex Fleabay [same size]. About £12 with a built in buzzer which is very loud and easily heard at speed. Coupled with LEDx8 festoons at the back and orange B15s at the front, it's now the business. Headlight upgraded from the Bosch 35W nightmare with a 7" Norton Dominator all chrome shell/bezel [from Norbsa2][£25] with Wipac quadoptic glass and halogen unit from VWP[£50].

Thanks for info - will check fleabay, but first need to fix LH front indicator as it fell off this pm - the stem sheared at the headlight. More Fleabay!!

Checked voltage as well - didn't go above 14.25- 14.3 at the regulator - however high the revs went and ran at about 12.9 at 1500rpm. Presume this is normal.

Apologies for my electrical ignorance...

I've recently been doing some extended motorway running at 6 - 6,500 rpm and the indicators have been flashing very fast and erratically (they are fine below 6,000). Does this mean that my regulator/rectifier is shot? The battery showed no sign of fizzing.
